Max Ultra MCP connects an AI assistant directly to an already-open Autodesk 3ds Max.

Instead of manually searching through menus, repeating routine actions, or writing every MaxScript command yourself, you can describe the result you want in normal language. The assistant can inspect the scene, call dedicated 3ds Max tools, run approved operations, examine viewport screenshots, and continue working until the result is verified.

It is intended for 3D artists, architectural visualization specialists, designers, technical artists, and MaxScript developers—not only programmers.

What can it help you do?

Max Ultra MCP can assist with everyday 3ds Max work such as:

  • Inspecting the current scene, units, selection, objects, materials, cameras, lights, and renderer.
  • Creating, selecting, renaming, moving, rotating, scaling, cloning, or deleting objects.
  • Creating polygon meshes, splines, modifiers, layers, cameras, lights, and basic animation.
  • Finding geometry with missing or invalid material assignments.
  • Capturing clean, enlarged viewport screenshots so the AI can visually inspect the result.
  • Starting a render, checking its status, stopping it, and returning the rendered image.
  • Inspecting available renderer properties before changing supported settings.
  • Running MaxScript code, script files, macros, and 3ds Max Action commands.
  • Operating buttons and fields inside script or plugin windows that belong to 3ds Max.
  • Creating reusable MaxScript tools and testing them inside 3ds Max.
  • Building a dimensioned 3D floor plan from an attached drawing or reference image.
  • Working with several open 3ds Max instances and selecting the correct one for each task.

For operations that do not yet have a dedicated tool, the assistant can use MaxScript as an advanced fallback.

Typical use cases

Build a house plan from an image

Attach a dimensioned floor-plan image and ask the assistant to reproduce it in 3ds Max.

The assistant can interpret the measurements, validate the wall layout, create a preserved source spline, build the walls and floor, create door and window openings, and visually inspect the result from several viewport angles.

Review a scene before delivery

Ask the assistant to inspect the scene without modifying it. It can report missing materials, suspicious object settings, scene organization issues, and other items that may require attention before rendering or delivery.

Create and position a camera

The assistant can create or select a camera, enable Safe Frame, frame the subject, adjust the composition, and capture a viewport preview for visual verification.

For a single object, it can place the object clearly in the center of the frame and make sure the complete object remains visible.

Control previews and renders

Ask the assistant to prepare a clean viewport, hide distracting overlays, maximize the viewport, capture a screenshot, start a render, monitor it, or stop it.

Renderer-specific operations are checked against the renderer and plugin version available on the current computer.

Create a custom MaxScript tool

Describe the tool you need and ask the assistant to design, write, save, and test it. Max Ultra MCP includes agent guidance for safer MaxScript structure, user interfaces, paths, settings, cleanup, and MaxPkg packaging.

Automate a third-party script

The assistant can launch a MaxScript tool, wait for its window, inspect available controls, fill in values, press a button, and verify the scene afterward.

UI automation is restricted to windows owned by the selected 3dsmax.exe process.

Connecting Codex, ChatGPT Desktop, or Claude Code

You do not need to install Node.js, edit environment variables, or configure Windows manually.

Max Ultra MCP includes its own portable runtime.

After the first launch, open AI setup:

  1. Select ChatGPT Desktop / Codex or Claude Code.
  2. Click Install selected.
  3. Restart or reconnect the selected AI client.
  4. Return to the Test prompt tab.
  5. Copy the connection-test prompt and send it to the assistant.

Automatic setup uses the official client command-line tools and does not directly rewrite their configuration files.

If a supported client command is unavailable, the setup window provides the exact STDIO values for manual configuration or another MCP-compatible client.

What to do after installation

  1. Install the MZP through MaxPkg.
  2. Start Max Ultra MCP from the generated MaxPkg button or toolbar.
  3. Open AI setup and connect your preferred assistant.
  4. Restart or reconnect the AI client.
  5. Use the provided test prompt to verify the connection.
  6. Keep the target 3ds Max instance open while working with the assistant.
  7. Describe what you want to create, inspect, change, render, or automate.

If several 3ds Max instances are open, the assistant will ask you to select the intended instance.

Main panel and settings

The main panel shows:

  • Connection status.
  • The connected server and 3ds Max version.
  • Current scene, object, and selection information.
  • A readable activity log describing what 3ds Max is doing.
  • Quick access to AI client setup and settings.

The panel can be collapsed into a small button when you do not need it and restored later.

Available settings include:

  • Start Max Ultra MCP automatically with 3ds Max.
  • Show or hide the server console.
  • Enable or disable automatic update checks.
  • Check for updates manually.
  • Reopen AI client setup.
  • View the current version, author, and developer website.

The server console is hidden by default.

Ready-to-use prompts

Safe connection test

Connect to the open Autodesk 3ds Max through Max Ultra MCP.

List the available 3ds Max instances and select the only instance automatically.
Report the 3ds Max version, current scene name, scene units, object count, and
selection count.

Then capture one clean viewport screenshot.

Do not create, delete, move, render, save, reset, or otherwise modify the scene.

Build a 3D floor plan from an image

Attach the floor-plan image before sending this prompt:

Analyze the attached dimensioned house plan and build it in the open Autodesk
3ds Max through Max Ultra MCP.

Treat the dimensions visible in the image as the source of truth. Use millimeters
without changing the system units of an existing scene.

Identify the exterior walls, interior walls, doors, windows, and floor outline.
If an important measurement cannot be determined reliably, ask me one specific
question instead of guessing.

Use these defaults only when the drawing does not provide a value:

- Wall height: 3000 mm
- Exterior wall thickness: 300 mm
- Interior wall thickness: 150 mm
- Door height: 2100 mm
- Window sill height: 900 mm
- Window height: 1400 mm
- Floor thickness: 200 mm

Validate the structured floor plan before building it. Preserve the original wall
plan as a spline, create the final geometry from a copy, remove temporary opening
helpers, and check wall intersections, shading, normals, and smoothing.

After construction, capture a clean top view and a clean perspective view.
Compare both screenshots with the reference image and report the final wall,
window, and door counts and the overall dimensions.

Audit the scene before delivery

Review the open 3ds Max scene without modifying it.

Check the scene organization, units, object count, hidden and frozen objects,
missing or invalid material assignments, missing bitmap paths, XRefs, unusually
heavy geometry, high subdivision settings, displacement, and other settings that
may cause rendering or delivery problems.

Use read-only operations. Do not change selection, materials, modifiers, paths,
render settings, or scene files.

Return a prioritized report with:
1. Critical problems
2. Performance risks
3. Organization issues
4. Recommended actions

Create a useful MaxScript tool

Create a reusable MaxScript tool named Scene Delivery Checker.

The tool must have a compact interface with a Check Scene button and a readable
results area. It should report:

- Objects without materials
- Missing bitmap files
- Missing or unavailable XRefs
- Objects with non-uniform scale
- TurboSmooth or MeshSmooth modifiers with unusually high iterations
- Hidden or frozen geometry
- The current scene units and renderer

The tool must be read-only and must not fix anything automatically.

Follow the Max Ultra MCP MaxScript coding rules. Ask me where to save the script
before writing a file. Test it in the current scene without saving or modifying
the scene, then show me the finished interface and summarize the test result.

Prepare a camera and preview

Create or select a camera for the main subject in the scene.

Enable Safe Frame and compose the image clearly. If there is only one main object,
place it in the center and make sure the complete object fits inside the frame.

Use a natural perspective without extreme lens distortion. Capture a clean,
maximized viewport screenshot with selection outlines, brackets, grids, helpers,
gizmos, and tooltips hidden.

Show me the screenshot before changing render settings or starting a render.

Internet connection

The connection between Max Ultra MCP and 3ds Max is local and uses 127.0.0.1. The local bridge does not need to expose a port to the internet.

An internet connection is normally required by cloud-based AI clients such as Codex, ChatGPT, or Claude. It is also required for automatic update checks and downloading new releases.

Max Ultra MCP does not upload the complete .max scene by itself. Scene information, tool results, or screenshots are returned only when requested through the connected AI client. The privacy rules of the selected AI provider still apply.

Safety

Scene-changing operations can use the approval system provided by the MCP client. Complex operations support validation, post-operation checks, and undo-friendly workflows where available.

Arbitrary MaxScript remains a powerful advanced feature. Save important work and keep backups before allowing large scene changes or running generated scripts.

UI automation is limited to the selected 3ds Max process and cannot control unrelated applications.

Requirements

  • Windows.
  • Autodesk 3ds Max 2022–2027.
  • Codex, ChatGPT Desktop, Claude Code, or another MCP-compatible AI client.
  • Internet access for cloud AI clients and automatic updates.
  • No separate Node.js installation.
  • No administrator rights required for the portable runtime.

Some renderer, exporter, or plugin-specific operations depend on the versions installed on the current computer. Unsupported operations return a clear error instead of reporting false success.
