Frequently Asked Questions
What is MaxPkg?
MaxPkg is a simple way to find, install, update, and remove Autodesk 3ds Max scripts. Think of it as a small app store for 3ds Max tools: open a package page, click Install, drag the install block into the 3ds Max viewport, and MaxPkg handles the boring part.
How do I install a 3ds Max script?
Open the package page, click Install, then drag the install block into the 3ds Max viewport. If MaxPkg Manager is not installed yet, the installer will offer to install it first. After that, it installs the package you selected.
What if drag and drop does not work?
Some browsers, Windows settings, or remote desktop setups can make drag and drop less reliable. In that case, click Download Installer in the install window, then run the downloaded file in 3ds Max through Scripting -> Run Script.
Which versions of Autodesk 3ds Max are supported?
Each package shows its supported 3ds Max range, for example 3ds Max 2016-2027. Check that badge or the package details before installing.
Is MaxPkg free to use?
Yes. MaxPkg itself is free to use. Packages can still have different licenses: free, commercial, open source, trial, or shareware. The license is shown on each package page.
Is it safe to install scripts through MaxPkg?
MaxPkg is designed to make installation clearer and more predictable. Package pages show the developer, screenshots, version, compatibility, license, changelog, and reviews. New packages and new versions go through review before they become public.
What is MaxPkg Manager?
MaxPkg Manager is the small manager that runs inside 3ds Max. It lets you search packages, open package details, install tools, remove installed tools, and keep package buttons organized in a toolbar.
How do I update installed scripts?
When a developer publishes an approved new version, MaxPkg Manager can show that an update is available. You can install the newer version without manually downloading archives and replacing files by hand.
Can I uninstall a package later?
Yes. Packages installed through MaxPkg Manager can be removed from inside 3ds Max. Installed packages remain local, so your tools do not disappear just because the website is unavailable.
Can I download only the MZP file?
Yes. Package pages include Download MZP manually. This downloads only the package archive. You can run the .mzp in 3ds Max through Scripting -> Run Script. This old-school method installs only that package and does not install MaxPkg Manager.
Do I need to create an account?
You can browse packages and download public files without an account. You need an account to write reviews, become a developer, publish packages, and reply to reviews as a package author.
Can I publish my own 3ds Max scripts?
Yes. Open your account page, click Become a Developer, package your script with MaxPkg Packager, test the generated .mzp in 3ds Max, then drop the .mzp into the Developer Dashboard. MaxPkg reads the manifest and fills the package/version information for you.
What does MaxPkg read from an uploaded MZP?
MaxPkg can read the package name, short description, version, supported 3ds Max range, license, changelog, icon, links, and package GUID from the uploaded .mzp. Longer public descriptions and screenshots can still be polished on the website.
How are packages and versions reviewed?
New packages and new versions are reviewed before they become public. This helps keep package pages useful and reduces surprises for artists. If something is rejected, the developer sees the reason in the dashboard and can upload a corrected package.
Why does every package have a GUID?
A GUID is the private identity of a package. It tells MaxPkg that a new upload belongs to the same package. Developers should keep it stable, avoid sharing it publicly, and not generate a new one for an existing tool.
Why can I not install a package?
The most common reasons are:
- Your version of 3ds Max is not supported.
- The package or its latest version is not approved yet.
- Your internet connection is unavailable.
- Drag and drop is blocked by the browser, Windows settings, or a remote desktop session.
- 3ds Max cannot download MaxPkg Manager or the package file. In this case, try the manual installer or manual MZP download.
Where can I get support?
Each package can include developer links such as website, GitHub, support URL, or contact email. For questions about MaxPkg itself, use the contact page or the support details shown on the site.
Why should I use a package manager for 3ds Max?
A package manager saves time by making installation, updates, package details, and removal feel consistent. Instead of remembering where every script put its files or toolbar button, you get one predictable place to manage tools.
